According to Kim Chilton Griffith

al fres·co [ al-fres-koh ] — adverb: styling your outdoor space.

Summer is here, and while the world continues to change, one thing remains true — we all crave moments that feel open, beautiful, and alive. Whether you have a cozy balcony or a full backyard retreat, dining al fresco is one of the easiest ways to create that feeling right at home.

Even with “stay-at-home” orders and limited restaurant service, your patio, deck, or backyard can become the most stylish spot in town. Whether you’re a design enthusiast, a dedicated DIYer, or simply someone who loves creating atmosphere, this is your invitation to elevate the everyday.

Before you begin, think about your design mood. Are you channeling boho chic or modern sophistication? Your style will set the tone for your color palette, your tableware, and the little details that make the space your own.

For the small space…

Even the smallest area can feel intentional with the right pieces. A rolling cart or movable bar instantly adds function and flair. Mornings? Roll it out for coffee and croissants. Evenings? Let it transform into your cocktail station with flowers, candles, and a curated mix of glassware.

The beauty of a bar cart is its versatility — it’s part utility, part décor, and always a conversation starter.

For the larger space…

If your space allows, think about creating zones for lounging, dining, and conversation. A table with a bench makes seating flexible and communal, while lightweight chairs keep things adaptable. Plan for flow — movement should feel easy and inviting.

For your pretty table décor…

Paper plates and red cups? Absolutely not.

Instead, opt for melamine or acrylic dinnerware — stylish, durable, and beautifully practical. These pieces elevate the look instantly while staying outdoor-friendly. Acrylic glassware, patterned napkins, and layered textures are small choices that create a cohesive, collected feel.

For your lighting…

Lighting is everything.

During the day, natural sunlight sets the tone — but as evening falls, bring in layers of light. Candles, lanterns, and string lights can completely transform your space. Use flickering flameless candles indoors to mirror the glow outside, and drape string lights overhead for that starlit canopy effect.

And don’t forget a few citronella candles — function can still be beautiful.

Now that you have your decor down, there’s only two things left to decide…

what are you wearing and what are you sipping!

For the Wear…

Add flair to your affair with soft, flowy fashion. Kaftans are my go-to — elegant, effortless, and forgiving in the summer heat. If boutiques are out of reach, there are countless online finds that merge comfort and style.

For the Sip…

Warm evenings call for chilled wines and easy elegance. My favorites: Sancerre, Sauvignon Blanc, and Rosé — each crisp, refreshing, and perfect for the occasion.

Chill bottles in advance and serve them with care — in a decanter, an ice bucket, or simply your favorite stemware. One of my current favorites: Pierre Cherrier & Fils 2018 Domaine de la Rossignole Sancerre L’Essential — intensely fruity, beautifully balanced, and about $30 a bottle if you can find it.

Add music. A subtle playlist under the stars can turn a casual dinner into an experience.

Let the night unfold naturally — laughter, candlelight, and conversation flowing as easily as the wine.

Cheers to dining amongst the stars.
